Central Park Art Sale
2013
Installation

Originally staged in Central Park, New York City; installation recreation. In one of his most legendary acts of anonymity and irony, Banksy set up an unmarked art stall in Central Park during his 2013 New York residency, Better Out Than In. For an entire afternoon, a man quietly sold original, signed Banksy canvases each priced at just $60 to unsuspecting passersby. Few stopped to look, and only a handful of works were purchased, despite their actual worth in the hundreds of thousands.
This installation recreates that moment, exploring Banksy’s critique of art-world value systems, celebrity obsession, and consumer perception. By stripping his work of context and branding, Banksy tested the true meaning of authenticity and the absurd economics of contemporary art.
What determines the value of art its creator, its context, or its story? Here, Banksy’s “Central Park Art Sale” invites viewers to confront that question anew.
