The cover was produced by Banksy in February 2010, in conjunction with the opening of his documentary film, ‘Exit Through the Giftshop’.
The painting on the wall was created in the Leake Street Tunnels in London, where Banksy created a temporary cinema used for several days – the location where he debuted his movie. The ‘Lambeth Palace Cinema’ was a unique cavernous space and featured several pieces of his work on display. Audiences, after their movie screening, could even stop to spray paint on a wall, while exiting the tunnels on their way home.
The image features a chimpanzee that has climbed up a CCTV camera pole, holding a clapperboard, wearing a baseball cap backwards and carrying a sound recorder off its right shoulder.
Banksy’s painting of the chimp with clapperboard was not originally created before the opening night of the film. It was created the following night, once the tunnels were empty of crowds, and then photographed for the magazine.
The Sunday Times also filmed Banksy making the stencil painting and this video is still available on YouTube.
