Jesus)
2004

Print on Paper

“Christ With Shopping Bags”, also known as Consumer Jesus or CWSB, is a powerful Banksy print that depicts a crucified Jesus Christ holding shopping bags instead of being affixed to a cross. This artwork serves as a critique of the commercialisation associated with religious festivities and highlights how capitalism has permeated even the most sacred realms. By altering iconic imagery, Banksy directs a fierce criticism towards the influence of capitalism.

Only 82 prints of “Christ With Shopping Bags” were produced, which may allude to the year 1482 when the artist Hugo van der Goes passed away before completing his work, “Christ on a Cross”. Additionally, an original version of this artwork was discovered in the corner of the Santa's Ghetto shop in 2004, further adding to its significance.

With this piece, Banksy challenges societal norms and invites viewers to reconsider the impact of consumerism on our values and beliefs.
