Esso
2000
Print on Paper

Banksy's involvement in the campaign against Esso (Exxon Mobil) initiated by Greenpeace in 2001 extends beyond environmental concerns. ‘Esso’ highlights the paradox of our desire to protect nature while maintaining unsustainable modern lifestyles. Banksy suggests that focusing solely on criticising an oil ‘cartel’ without addressing the issue of consumerism is comparable to testing a gas tube for leaks by igniting a match. His artwork draws attention to the interconnectedness of environmental decline and consumer behaviour.
