Judge Beating a Protester
2025
Mural

A protester lies on the ground, still clutching a blood stained placard, while a judge in traditional wig and black robe raises a gavel to strike. The scene reverses the expected roles of justice, transforming the figure meant to uphold the law into an agent of violence. What should represent fairness and protection becomes an instrument of force.
Installed outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London, the work directly confronts the institution it depicts. Banksy collapses the boundary between representation and reality, placing critique at the very site of authority. The familiar symbols of law, order, and moral legitimacy are destabilised, revealing a system in which power can override accountability.
The contrast between the calm architectural setting and the brutality of the image intensifies its impact. Passersby move through the scene, momentarily intersecting with it, becoming part of the composition and its meaning. The work exists not only as an image, but as an interruption within everyday life.
Shortly after its appearance, the mural was covered and removed, reinforcing the message it conveys. Its disappearance becomes part of the narrative, suggesting that uncomfortable truths are often hidden, controlled, or erased. In this sense, the work extends beyond its physical presence, leaving behind a question about justice, visibility, and who ultimately holds power.
