Monkey Queen
2003
Print on Paper

Banksy's portrayal of a monkey as the Queen of England can be interpreted as both an extension of his exploration of monkeys rising to higher positions in human society or as a satirical critique of the British Monarchy. This artwork initially appeared at Chilled Out Zone, a club in central London.
The image replaces the traditional depiction of the Queen with a monkey's face in front of a target composed of the colours of the British flag. It underwent various iterations and transformations. Banksy's intention was to challenge the legitimacy of the monarchy and governance of England.
Initially displayed on the club's wall, the artwork was later moved to the front window. It drew attention from monarchy supporters who deemed the depiction disrespectful to both the Queen and the flag, particularly during the Queen's Silver Jubilee. To which the artist commented “The highest position in British society is not a reward for talent or hard work but is simply handed out with the accident of birth… God Save The Queen.”
