The Bishop
2009
Sculpture

A striking sculpture Exhibited at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery during the “Banksy vs Bristol Museum” takeover. The Bishop reimagines a traditional religious figure through a lens of satire and subversion. The bishop, rendered in classical style, stands confidently in ecclesiastical robes yet wears only a leather harness and underwear beneath, turning reverence into ridicule. With this provocative contrast, Banksy exposes the tension between faith and hypocrisy, power and vulnerability. By blending sacred iconography with elements of fetish culture, the artist challenges institutional authority and the moral façades that often conceal human weakness and desire.
