Thomas The Tank Engine
2008
Print on Canvas

In this darkly humorous painting, Banksy merges childhood nostalgia with the rebellious spirit of graffiti culture. As the cheerful Thomas the Tank Engine sleeps under a streetlight, two hooded figures cover him in tags and throw-ups transforming an icon of innocence into a canvas of defiance. The scene pays homage to the train graffiti movement of 1980s New York, when artists painted subway cars to send their art “on tour.” By vandalising a beloved children’s character, Banksy playfully questions where innocence ends and expression begins.
